Cupping is a form of treatment where special cups are placed on the skin to create a vacuum or suction, causing the superficial layers of tissue to be pulled upwards into the cup.
The goal is to stimulate blood flow, relieve muscle tension, reduce pain, and promote healing. It has roots in traditional practices like Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), but is also found in other cultural healing traditions, including Middle Eastern, European, and Asian practices.
Cupping practices may involve glass, bamboo, silicon, and plastic cups. Southpaw Movement utilizes silicon & plastic cups only.
What is cupping?
We will typically start with a brief consultation to understand your health concerns, symptoms, and overall well-being. I’ll ask about any pain, stiffness, or areas of discomfort.
There are a variety of cupping techniques that may be used, including both static and dynamic, utilizing plastic and silicon cups. A light layer of oil may be applied to the skin to help cups glide more easily in the instance of dynamic cupping. You may be asked to perform specific stretches or Pilates-based exercises while cups are on the body, in the case that this would improve your experience and cupping benefits.
You will feel a light to moderate pulling session on the skin. The goal is never to induce pain, so I will check in with you regularly to insure your comfort throughout the session. In the case of static cupping, cups may be left on a specific area for 5-15min depending on tolerance and need. Pressure and tension will be tailored to each individual.
You will likely have some bruising at the end of the session and in days following. You will receive a link to aftercare guidelines to make sure you’re receiving the full benefit of each session and avoiding unnecessary discomfort.
Cupping is believed to offer a variety of benefits, including increased circulation, improved immune function, lymphatic drainage, reduced muscle pain, and increased recovery.
Cupping results vary from person to person, but many find it to be an effective method to calm the nervous system and improve recovery from exercise, reducing pain and relieving stress, helping you in your every day life.
