Somatic healing is an approach that integrates the mind-body connection to promote healing and personal growth.
The term "somatic" refers to the body, and somatic healing is rooted in the understanding that the body holds and processes emotions, memories, and trauma, often unconsciously. This can often lead to physical pain, tension, and even illness.
Through somatic healing practices, individuals are guided to become more aware of their body’s sensations, movements, and physical responses to emotions and experiences.
What is somatic healing?
Somatic healing with Southpaw Movement utilizes a variety of techniques including movement, meditation, and visualization.
Movements are pulled from Pilates & Yoga as well the Bartenieff, & Feldenkrais methods based in developmental patterning. This is a fancier way of saying that movement variety is implemented to help release both physical and emotional pain from the body and mind.
An emphasis is placed on different aspects of mindfulness practices to build a feeling of safety in the mind-body connection.
What does somatic healing involve?
We will typically start with a consultation to understand your concerns, any symptoms of pain, discomfort, chronic illness, tension, or other issues.
Throughout the session, we will use a combination of verbal guidance, non-verbal cues, movement and bodywork to help you deepen your connection to your body and process any emotional material that may arise. The aim is not just to address specific issues, but to help you develop a deeper understanding of how your body holds and expresses emotions, ultimately leading to greater emotional freedom, relaxation, and well-being throughout life.
You may experience very specific emotions with clear roots, or emotions and sensations that may seem more vague or with unknown roots. The main purpose is to allow these things to come up in a safe environment and be able to release them so they are no longer carried with you in every day life. Whatever may come up, you are encouraged to speak it either aloud or simply just to yourself, whichever you are most comfortable with. Your session is a space that is fully judgment free.
You will likely be given a type of ‘homework’ that may include breathing practices, movement, visualization techniques, and/or journaling to help you integrate the work from each session into your daily life.
